As a Chief Master and VP of Development for Go2 Karate, I’ve had the honor of meeting incredible martial artists, but interviewing Liana Mutia truly stood out. Liana’s approach to judo combines strategic precision and resilience—qualities we uphold here at Go2 Karate. Liana shared how, unlike some athletes, she emphasizes mental preparation over brute strength, studying her opponents and using careful planning to gain an advantage. This mindset is what we encourage at Go2 Karate, as martial arts is a discipline that sharpens both the mind and body. Liana’s journey reminds us that martial arts is about adapting and constantly evolving, pushing beyond limitations, and harnessing the power of strategic thinking. Her story is an inspiration to martial artists of all levels, showing that success in martial arts goes beyond the mat—it’s a way of life that builds character, confidence, and resilience.

An Interview With Lianna Mutia - Go2 Karate Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

Conducted by Dr. Greg Moody, Chief Master, Go2 Karate Magazine

Interview Highlights:

Dr. Greg Moody, Chief Master, Go2 Karate Magazine:
"Liana, thank you for joining us today. Can you tell us about what it was like representing Team USA in the Paralympics?"

Liana Mutia:
"It was both exhausting and exhilarating. Competing at that level demands so much physically and mentally. But when I won the silver medal, it felt like all the hard work and sacrifices were worth it. Representing Team USA on a global stage was a dream come true, and it’s a moment I’ll cherish forever."

Dr. Greg Moody, Chief Master, Go2 Karate Magazine:
"Your approach to judo emphasizes strategy and preparation over brute strength. How did that shape your training and competitive journey?"

Liana Mutia:
"For me, winning isn’t just about strength; it’s about planning and precision. I studied my opponents, focusing on how to maximize my strengths. Judo, like life, rewards a smart approach. Being strategic helped me overcome physical challenges and outmaneuver opponents who relied on brute force."

Dr. Greg Moody, Chief Master, Go2 Karate Magazine:
"How did your background in wrestling impact your judo training?"

Liana Mutia:
"Wrestling taught me discipline, repetition, and muscle memory—key elements in both sports. My favorite throw in judo, ippon seoi nage, actually comes from wrestling. That background allowed me to adapt quickly and use my strengths effectively in judo."

Dr. Greg Moody, Chief Master, Go2 Karate Magazine:
"What advice would you give to young athletes, especially those with disabilities who aspire to achieve something remarkable?"

Liana Mutia:
"I’d advise them to focus on three principles: high intention, intelligent execution, and sincere effort. Many people talk about working hard, but it’s about working smart. Resources and time can be limited, so make every moment and action count. Efficiency and strategy have been crucial in my journey."

Dr. Greg Moody, Chief Master, Go2 Karate Magazine:
"What’s next on your journey in martial arts and your career?"

Liana Mutia:
"I’m setting my sights on the LA 2028 Paralympics while balancing my tech career. My focus now is on gathering information on competitors to strategize for the next games. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the journey and the opportunities to inspire others."
