Every great story has a beginning, and Sofia’s started in Texas when she was just three years old. Like many toddlers her age, Sofia was a bundle of energy, but she struggled with the typical challenges of early childhood: focus and listening to Mom and Dad. At the time, her older brother, Nathaniel Guse, was already training on the mat. Sofia wanted to be right there with him, but there was a hurdle: the instructor, Master Zachary Rogers, didn’t typically enroll students until they turned four.
However, Sofia wasn’t about to let a little thing like an age requirement stop her.
The Lobby Spectator
While her brother trained, Sofia would stand in the lobby, her eyes fixed on the class. Instead of running around or playing with toys, she began to mimic the movements she saw. She was learning the curriculum through observation and determination. Slowly but surely, the instructors and her parents noticed a massive shift. The “lobby spectator” was becoming more focused and disciplined than many students twice her age. Seeing her dedication and the positive changes in her behavior, Master Rogers made an exception and allowed her to enroll early.
Finding Her Voice in Colorado
After two years of foundational training in Texas, the Guse family moved to Colorado. By this time, Sofia was no longer just a student; she was a martial artist in the making. She spent three years in Colorado, where her training hit a new gear. It was here that she joined the Leadership program, a pivotal step that moves a student from simply learning techniques to understanding the responsibility of being a role model. Sofia began leading warmups and life skill activities, finding her voice in front of a crowd.
But perhaps the most memorable part of her Colorado years was her role on the “demo team.” Sofia was selected to be at the “front” of the team: the focal point of their high-energy performances. Anyone who knows Sofia knows she has a healthy dose of personality, and she put that “sassiness” to excellent use. She learned how to command an audience, blending her technical skill with a charismatic flair that brought laughter and cheers from the crowd.
A Permanent Home in Virginia
When the family moved to Virginia, they found their permanent home at Changing Lives Martial Arts. Transitioning to a new school can be daunting, but Sofia arrived with years of experience and a level of confidence that was impossible to miss. It wasn’t long before the chief instructor LainaLee Rambow saw the fire in Sofia’s eyes. Her determination was evident in every kick and every form. Because of her background in leadership, Sofia was quickly identified as a student who could help others. Sofia stepped into this role naturally, assisting other students on the mat and helping them refine their techniques with the same patience that was once shown to her.
Becoming State Champion
While leadership and community are core pillars of our school, the competitive spirit is where students often find their true limits. Sofia decided to take her skills to the tournament circuit, and the results were spectacular. Competing in the ATA (American Taekwondo Association) circuit requires immense discipline. You aren’t just fighting an opponent; you are fighting your own fatigue, nerves, and doubts. Sofia rose to the occasion, with the support of her brother Nathaniel, bringing home several medals of achievement throughout her competitive season. Her hard work culminated in the ultimate recognition: being named State Champion.
A Leader on and off the Mat
Today, at 14 years old, Sofia is a 3rd Degree Black Belt: a rank that commands respect in any dojang. But if you walk into the schools today, you might find her doing more than just training. Sofia has become an integral part of the Changing Lives Martial Arts operations.
She works closely with the rest of the team to ensure that every student feels as welcome as she did when she first arrived in Virginia. Whether it’s helping a new family fill out a student analysis form or cheering on a student during their first tournament, Sofia is always there to lend a hand.
The Journey Continues
Sofia’s journey is far from over. She currently has her sights set on her 4th Degree Black Belt, a prestigious rank that requires even deeper dedication and a master-level understanding of the art. With many midterms and challenges ahead, we have no doubt that she will tackle them with the same “sass” and determination that defined her early years.
